May 2012 – mms cycle club

Cheshire & South Manchester: 27th May – departing at 10.30 from Withington Green, Wilmslow Road opp Christies Hospital

What will we see..

I hear you cry! There will be lots of private houses – none of which i hasten to add we have access to – so there will be plenty of peering from the road and possibly looking over hedges.  A couple fo 30s flat roofed villas, lots of 60s stuff and even a couple of good contemporary  houses (and this being Cheshire, plenty of tacky footballers McMansions).Frazer Crane is the star of the show – including George Best’s (now sadly altered) house.  A rare post war house in Alderley Edge by Henry Elder – the architect of Stretford’s Esseldo/ Longford cinema. A very groovy 60s wood and concrete mushroom car showroom – now a coffe bar!

We will even throw in a very good office block by MMS favourites Cruickshank and Seward of Renold Building fame. If we have time we may even pop up to Mario Balatteli’s house – im not sure exactly which one it is but it will the one either on fire or sulking.

First Rule of Cycle Club..

This is a very informal and fun outing but feel i should establish some early provisos. This is as much about the cycling as it is about the architecture so this is aimed at confident and experienced cyclists who have more than a basic level of fitness and bike handling. The pace will be as slow as the slowest rider and we will wait for everybody but the total milage from start point to end point will be between 30 and 40 miles (depending on where you set off from yourself) so bare that in mind.

This ride is aimed at people with a half decent road bike, tourer or hybrid bike. A mountain bike is probably not appropriate and for those of you hipsters with fixies you are more than welcome and whilst there will be no major hills there are a couple of small river valleys to cross so thighs of steel may help. The pace, as i said, will be gentle with obviously lots of stops to look at stuff. We will have a lesuirely lunch, probably in Alderley Edge, and i reckon we will be out for about 4 hours all in.

You are all grown ups but i would like to stress your own well being is your responsibility.

Please wear appropiate clothing and make sure your bicycle is up to the job.I will be carrying a spare inner tube and some small tools but please make sure your bike is safe and proper for a nice day out.Hopefully the weather will be kind but please be prepared for the weather when choosing clothing. There are plenty of railway stations along the route at Styal, Handforth, Wilmslow and Alderley for those of you who cant manage the full route. Please bring food and drink to keep you going or enough pennies to buy stuff whilst we are out. Hopefully see you all there.
